Creating the performance space

After saying earlier in the interview:
On some nights
I don't know where Carapace
begins and Manuel's ends
they're so integral
Joyce talked about the storyteller and audience creating the performance space together:
It's the people.
It's the audience.
It's both of those things
coming together and
that symbiosis that happens.
It's a perfect storm.
It is like it’s possible for the space to not matter at all. It is the storyteller treating the space like a stage and the audience giving that space as a stage that makes it a performance space.

Joyce gave another example of people ignoring the space when talking about lighting.
I wish we had mood lighting.
I think lighting would be a big key
but I've seen this place lit up bright as day.
People will be involved in the story.

Dimmer lighting might make for a more conducive storytelling environment, but the audience is willing to ignore that the sun is still up during the summer shows.
