MC comments between stories

The MC is also in a unique position to comment on stories. I notice that the MC tries to have something to say after each story that connects with something from the story. Often the comments are funny. Sometimes they are about things I hardly paid attention to, like astrology being dependent on time zone. This job is improvisational and requires that the MC really pay attention to the stories so that he’ll have something to say. The MC also has the last word on the story, though, and could change the tone. I noticed at the July Carapace that when the MC said the guy who had to judge 14 year old asses must hate his job, the storyteller gave him a look. It is an interesting flipped perspective. Maybe that guy did hate his job. But it took the audience away from thinking about how the storyteller felt having her 14 year old ass judged. I don’t want to make a value judgement about moving on from the stories. There is no real time left for reflection between stories, and the audience will soon be distracted by the next storyteller anyway. Perhaps the MC is like a palate cleanser between stories.
