Difficult stories for the TV audience

Tom talked about a difficult story from Carapace being highlighted by PBS:
Perhaps,
every other time,
somebody will go really deep about their family –
and particularly about dysfunctional families.
There was a woman in fact,
PBS put it on their
roster, that kind of pushed it as a product
rather than digging for it.
But one woman told about how when she was in
grade school she was cutting herself.
And that’s
a subject that I’m surprised –
but it’s very important and it’s very real.
But I didn’t know that
PBS would see that it was a subject that people could handle.
But they did.
And maybe with some courage that they did that.

This is so interesting to the concept of safe space. The PBS audience is different from the Carapace audience and the producers had to make decisions about what they wanted to share with the TV audience.
